    comments? suggestions??

Alright here it goes, im going to ETSU as an exercise science major with a minor in business and hopefully by october i am going to be a certified personal trainer. I have been thinking about opening up a good gym somewhere in this area when i get out. I just dont know how successful that would be. I mean, i hate to say it but nothing around here seems to do any good anymore. it wont be for a while, its just a thought i have had and when i get driven to do something I usually go through with it. This area does have a ton of athletes and their really isnt much better stuff to do. Another option i have with the Ex. science degree is something that i love and didnt find out until recently that there was a program for it......... making out programs for geriatric patients. through my experience with working as a pt tech i have grown to love working with the elderly in hospitals. this would be more of a job at a retirement home and from the list of options they had available at the college it looked like the average salary was starting out at about 30 an hour. Im all for that, but im solely getting the minor in business to try and run my own thing. ive always wanted to and then maybe later on go into the Physical Therapy program, but i dont know about that for sure yet. I want to love what i do, thats more important to me than anything. This IS a long way off, but dang i would love to have a big gym around here with maybe a pool and an indoor track. kind of like the Great Body Company in kingsport. weekly programs and everything. I would love it and it would give a lot of people around here an opportunity to work out in a comfortable setting. Some people dont go for the hard core crap and i understand that. ive grown up a lot after leaving for college and ive started to think about things i usually never did. I actually worry now and i hate it, but it happens! I just dont want my 60000 dollar piece of paper to go to waste!
Cant we all just get along?

Weelllll they break'em regular in the mines, make it a gym and a rehab center at the same time. Right now the coal market is as good as it has been in years , therapy for breaks/strains/sprains is pretty good . Perhaps you might want to contact some of the local hospitals, before deciding on a location- South East Kentucky might be a place to start.

If your gonna open a gym, and want it to be successful against the area gyms, just make sure you have things they dont, and will never offer.

Things like a Spa w/ a massuse(sp?), Tanning Beds, have a mini nuturion store. Better equitment, and competive rates. Once you get members going there you can always jack up the prices to pay the rent. Im sure after working out at a real gym, no one would want to go back to the crap that we have around here. Nothing against Hard Rock, its just got a flood of members, its hard to work out there during the day because you have to wait and seems like most are there to socialize anyways. They dont have anything new in there either. Its understandable though because 40% of the ppl who work out there never pay their dues.

A good place to put the new gym would be right smack dab in the middle of the County. Where ever that is. lol

I just don't know about this area for a good gym. I hear people complaining a lot about the quality of equipment at the ones we have, so I don't know what the problem is, such as location, not enough members to afford quality equipment, or what. Maybe we don't have the population base to support a good quality club. One with an indoor pool, walking track, and basketball, volleyball, and racquetball facilities would be nice.

Doug Humphreys had the nicest gym this area has ever seen, but it eventually went under and he sold out to Norton Community.

Suggestion on if you do open a gym. Prices are a major reason why people don't join. Especially young people who can't work because of school or sports. Some people just need the extra time to study. I used to be a member of Curves and they offered certain discounts.

Also, just looking around, it seems like this area has some of the worst physical fitness of anywhere. Theres just so many people that dont care how they look, or what they eat. Ive been to other towns and youll see over 100 people out running in the morning. Here in norton, you might see 2 or 3 the whole day out jogging. Its really amazing how little people care about their health around here.

You just described me, honestly we have to die someway. I'm 6'3 and way 250 pounds if thatt kills me oh well. As long as I dont end up being some un-Godly weight I dont really care. I also get tired of turning on the tv and seeing somebody telling me that I'm fat and need to lose some weight.
